About psychoanalytic psychotherapy

The Viennese doctor Sigmund Freud (1856-1839) introduced the world to an innovative way of thinking about the functioning of the human mind. For the world of that time - early years of the 20th century, the idea of displacing unwanted content from consciousness and the role of sexuality in human mental functioning was a real revolution. Since the time of Freud, many clinicians have emerged to develop his idea, thanks to which the theory and method evolved into today's shape used all around the world for the treatment of mental disorders and psychic suffering.

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is a different method than psychoanalysis. These two forms of work are differentiated by the frequency of sessions, which in psychoanalysis amounts to 4 to 5 sessions a week, while in therapy these are 1-2 sessions. A couch is used in psychoanalysis, while in analytical psychotherapy, a couch is used less frequently, in favor of armchairs and seating facing each other. Theoretical preparation and professional training are also different - psychoanalysis is conducted by a psychoanalyst, and therapy by a psychotherapist.

Supervision aims to provide clinical support to the psychotherapist in conducting the therapeutic processes of his patients. The main tool of the therapist's work is the therapist himself - his mind and psyche. Thanks to the supervision, it is possible to avoid mistakes resulting from the therapists entanglement in the patient's process. Supervision is an important point of reference and is a source of development and safety of the conducted processes.

Psychotherapy is a talking therapy, that means, that the main tool is conversation. Change takes place by inspiring transformations in the patient's internal way of experiencing and thinking about himself and the world. An important environment for these changes is the relationship between the therapist and the patient. Sometimes this area is a scene for difficult dynamics. Most difficult phases of psychotherapy can also be the most developmental.
